Glyphosate, a chemical in Roundup and other weed killers, has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Signal was appointed as a notice provider for a 2021 proposed class action settlement which would provide compensation, medical evaluations, and free legal services to people exposed to Roundup in the U.S. who had not already filed an individual lawsuit against Monsanto.
In a February 2021 press release announcing the proposed settlement, proposed class counsel cited Signal’s “comprehensive notice program” as a benefit to the broad-ranging class:
Class members are diverse and widespread, including large groups of individuals who may be itinerant, lack exposure to traditional media, or do not speak English as a first language. The comprehensive notice program was designed following extensive research and information-gathering to understand class members’ geographic concentration, as well as the communication channels by which they receive and share information. This research included a survey, interviews, and extensive analysis of U.S. government data. The resulting program is multifaceted, utilizing several communications channels and languages to reach class members.
Signal’s proposed notice plan was designed on the basis of pre-notice research to understand the media consumption habits of putative class members, as well as their attitudes toward certain settlement benefits. The research informed a proposed 6-month, nationwide, bilingual digital notice campaign targeting farmworkers, landscapers and groundskeepers, and people diagnosed with NHL across five platforms. The proposed plan also accounted for Spanish-language TV and radio ads in Mexican markets with high concentrations of U.S. migrants. Planned media notice was to be supplemented by an extensive on-ground outreach program to assist with trust-building and understanding of settlement benefits in church communities, among government officials and entities, local businesses, community and cultural events, and schools.
